That it started out as manageable but changed to be restrictive and then oppressive. I ended up wanting a stable, peaceful life. I could see that lack has a burden, doing nothing gets nothing and that chasing wealth has its own risks and they could result in real damage. Now, in retrospect, I can better see God’s hand in my life. Back then - what I had was hope! As I became an adult, the things I wanted to get sorted out were marriage, money and a place to call home.

The Bible says, “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much” (Luke 16:10). I wanted to be trustworthy. I had little! I came into the workforce in the depths of the 1990s recession. I had low income, a difficult employment market, no prospect of handouts, no inheritance to look forward to. What I did have was a strong drive to provide for my family. Progress came slowly, often through mistakes, but always through learning.

I found debt a necessity to get a home. Paying down debt brought increasing peace - not just financially, but emotionally. “The borrower is slave to the lender” (Proverbs 22:7). I did go through that cycle several times, but it was always with less risk overall.

My intent was good, but I was untrained and largely unguided. My learning came over time. Often, I worked at implementing just one learning really well. For a long time, it seemed I was not making any great progress. Small, consistent habits compounded over time. “The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance” (Proverbs 21:5). The opportunities change with the times, but consistent good habits are always useful.

One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is contentment. It provides freedom. Learning to live on less is not easy, but it brought me peace and clarity. “Godliness with contentment is great gain” (1 Timothy 6:6). I came to understand choosing a life simpler than I could afford was empowering. That helped me make better decisions for the longer‑term.

How to transfer on those things that made the difference was the challenge. I’d seen that wealth could spoil people. That people with little could have great joy and be generous with little. I arrived at the conclusion that the best thing I could do was hand on the tools and knowledge I’d learnt, so they could have it to draw upon as appropriate… and that everyone needs to find their own peace - the true peace - the peace for all circumstances and all times.

“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:7

What an incredible event! Jonny preached a message helping us understand if God still heals today like He did in The Bible.

To understand why their is healing, we must first understand why their is suffering and sickness. God created a good and perfect world which has been corrupted by sin. All suffering and sickness is a result of sin, which can be explained in three different ways:

-General Sin
Romans 5:12
Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned

-Personal Sin
1 Corinthians 11:30
That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep.

-Demonic Sin
See the story of Job

Despite suffering and sickness, The New Testament teaches us that God can and does still heal today. Does this mean everyone Christian will be healed? In this life no. In eternity, yes. Whilst their are so many accounts of people being healed in the scriptures and even today, not every person did receive healing in the scriptures and we know this to be true today also.

The truth about healing is this, God will heal every Christian in one of 3 ways:
-Immediately in a Miracle
-Gradually through Medicine
-Eventually in Glory

We are called to pray and ask God to heal because He is able to. But whatever His answer maybe, we are to trust in His nature and character which is good and faithful.

Jonny finished by sharing a prayer written by Ps Josh Howerton to help those who may feel disillusioned or disappointed that God hasn’t answered their prayer for healing the way they thought He would, see below:

Father I know you are God and that you never lie or abandon your children, but it sure feels like you did in this situation. It looks like you didn’t keep your promises to me and it feels like your love failed me. I know my perception is wrong because you are always good. I need you to help me trust your heart when I can’t understand your actions. Please heal my heart and deliver me from this disappointment.

Take some time to discuss this topic with your group, what has encouraged you and what challenges you.

Key Scriptures:

Acts Chapter 3:1-10;16

One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer—at three in the afternoon. 2 Now a man who was lame from birthwas being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts. 3 When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. 4 Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Our relationships can be broad and wide: family, marriage, parenting, friends, work colleagues, church community. The reality is that relationships can be both beautiful and painful. Ps Nick and Meredith shared with us that we each carry insecurity, immaturity and brokenness whether we realise it or not and we each bring these into our relationships with one another.

Becoming aware of our insecurity, immaturity and brokenness is the first step. Working through them is a life time journey of discipleship which we are all on. The good news is that Jesus desires for us to be whole and healthy. This happens through the work of the Holy Spirit, healthy Church community and taking some intentional and practical steps.

Ps Nick and Meredith shared that Gods desire is not that we would be just be healthy spiritually, but we would be healthy across all areas of our lives. They introduced some practical and holistic ‘pillars’ to help us become self aware and grow in our wholeness. These are Physical, Emotional, Spiritual, Relational and Financial. We were encouraged to pause once per month and mark out of 10 how you are going in each of these areas, find someone who you can chat to about how you are going and consider practical steps to address areas which may be on the lower side.

Some questions for you to consider are below:

1. Physical

- Am I treating my body as a temple of the Holy Spirit in how I use my body and what I consume?

- Am I am able to serve God well physically?

- Mark out of 10 how you are feeling physically. If it is below a 7, what changes do you need to make?

2. Emotional

- Am I experiencing any extreme emotions often such as anxiety, anger, sadness. If so, why do you think this is?

- Am I able to process the emotions I am experiencing appropriately?

- Do my emotions negatively impact the lives of those around me?

- Mark out of 10 how you are feeling emotionally. If it is below a 7, what do you need to do?

3. Spiritual

- Am I in a regular rhythm of connecting with God through prayer, Bible reading and worship?

- Am I in a regular rhythm of connecting with other believers to encourage and be encouraged in my faith e.g Sunday Church and mid-week Small Group

- Am I confident and secure in my identity as a Child of God?

- Mark out of 10 how you are feeling spiritually. If it is below a 7, what do you need to do?

4. Relational

- Am I enjoying the relationships I have in my life?

- Do I have clear and appropriate boundaries where needed?

- Am I am experiencing a good balance in being able to contribute as well as receive in the relationships I have?

- Mark out of 10 how you are feeling relationally. If it is below a 7, what do you need to do?

5. Financial

- Am I stewarding well what God has given to me through budgeting?

- Am I able to enjoy the finances in my life through giving, saving and spending?

- Mark out of 10 how you are feeling financially. If it is below a 7, what do you need to do?

Take some time to discuss this with your group or someone you trust to support you in these areas.

Key Scriptures:

1 Thessalonians 5:23
May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. Some can juggle. Some can touch their toes. Some can cook a steak or a mean spag bog. Some can hit a 5 iron 150 metres. One skill that we all possess in our fallen state is the skill of self swindling.

Essentially it means we are fraudulent to ourselves. The word says in Jeremiah that “the heart is deceitful above all things”. In the spiritual life our inner man, our inner drive is actively impairing and deceiving us. The “self-swindler” is imbedded if you like into our internal organisation. A “spy” among our internal, personal workings. To achieve the life God has for us, facing this type of inner betrayal we need a tag team of help - the Holy Spirit and faithful friends.

Through the Anointed series currently as a church we are pressing into the active presence of the Holy Spirit in our Christian walk and His work is crucial to convict us in the areas where we fall short. Practically though, surrounding ourselves with the right relationships is also huge.

Proverbs 27 verse 6 says that “Faithful are the wounds of a friend”. The wounds that are faithful are the ones that shine a light on our blindspots that could stop us fulfilling the promises of God in our life.

If we are serious about living the calling God has for each of us as men, husbands, fathers and mates we need to ask the Holy Spirit and ourselves these two questions:
1. What blind spots do I have in my life?
2. Who am I being accountable to and giving permission to speak into my life hard truths?

People from other nations are now hearing about Jesus and what He has done for them.

The crowd ask a key question ‘What does this mean?’.

Peter, anointed by The Holy Spirit stands up and addresses the crowd. He delivers His address in 3 parts:

1. Explanation
- Peter explains to the crowd that what they are witnessing is a promise which was prophesied 800 years earlier by Joel found in Joel Chapter 2:28-32. God in this moment had poured out His Spirit upon all flesh!
- The world we live in today is changing at a rapid rate and people today are asking a similar question - ‘what does this mean?’. Jonny encouraged us that whilst the world around us is changing, we need to be ready to meet people where they are at and provide explanation to our hope and security found in Jesus who is never changing.

2. Gospel
- Peter then shares The Gospel explaining that Jesus who they crucified was God, He was put to death on the cross for our sins but this all happened according to Gods plan to save and rescue the world from sin!
- Peter then explains that Jesus wasn’t just resurrected but He was also exalted. To be exalted means to be put in a position of high power or authority.
- Jonny encouraged us that Jesus has been given all authority in heaven and on earth and as His sons and daughters we live under that authority. Therefore be bold and confident when you are faced with spiritual challenges as they all come under the dominion of Jesus.

3. Response

- The scripture says that after hearing all of this the people were cut to the heart and ask ‘what shall we do?’.

- Peter gives clear direction on what their next steps should be - repent and be baptised.

- To repent means to change your direction 180 degrees - turn away from doing life your way and instead choose to do life according to the way of Jesus’ Kingdom. This is a decision we make when we first put our trust in Jesus as saviour and lord and a decision we make daily afterwards, empowered by The Holy Spirit.

- Water Baptism is a public declaration of what God has done in your life, a physical sign of a spiritual reality. Your old life which has now been crucified and your new, resurrected life which has began in Christ.

Jonny encouraged the whole church that if you have put your faith in Jesus but haven’t been baptised, our next baptism service will be on Easter Sunday, April 5th. Is there anybody in your small group who can take this next step in their faith and be baptised on Easter Sunday?

Key Scriptures:

Acts 2:14-21
Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15 These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

17 “‘In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
18 Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
    and they will prophesy.
19 I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,
blood and fire and billows of smoke.
20 The sun will be turned to darkness
    and the moon to blood
before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
21 And everyone who calls
on the name of the Lord will be saved.’[a]

1 Peter 3:16
And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it. 16 But do this in a gentle and respectful way

Acts 2:17
Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.

Acts 2:22-36
22 “Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. 23 This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men,[b] put him to death by nailing him to the cross. 24 But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. 25 David said about him:

“‘I saw the Lord always before me.
Because he is at my right hand,
    I will not be shaken.
26 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
my body also will rest in hope,
27 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
you will not let your holy one see decay.
28 You have made known to me the paths of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence.’[c]
29 “Fellow Israelites, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day. 30 But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. 31 Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay.32 God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it.33 Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.34 For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said,

“‘The Lord said to my Lord:
    “Sit at my right hand
35 until I make your enemies
    a footstool for your feet.”’[d]
36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.”

Romans 3:23-26
For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.24 Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins.25 For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past, 26 for he was looking ahead and including them in what he would do in this present time. God did this to demonstrate his righteousness, for he himself is fair and just, and he makes sinners right in his sight when they believe in Jesus.

John 3:16
“For this is how God loved the world: He gave[a] his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

Acts 2:37-41
37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.” 40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.

YouTube Link for Service:

Sunday Service

Group Reflection Questions:

What do you feel God saying to you?

What can you do about it?

What is an actionable plan you can put in place to help yourself respond to God?

Who can keep you accountable?

Prayer

The scriptures tell us that their are two expressions of speaking in tongues:

1. In this way we are speaking tongues to communicate with other people.

2. Jesus appeared after His resurrection for 40 days to remind The Disciples what lay ahead for them - to go and preach The Gospel, Make Disciples and advance The Kingdom of God.

Before He ascends back to the right hand of The Father, Jesus tells the disciples to wait for the promised Holy Spirit. Waiting for the Holy Spirit was imperative, because without it they could not do what God was calling them to do.

This is the same for us. We to need the person and presence of The Holy Spirit in our lives. We cannot follow Jesus faithfully or push back the Kingdom of darkness in this world in our own strength, wisdom and power. When we accept Jesus as our saviour and lord we become the temple of The Holy Spirit and He indwells us. However scripture indicates that there is a secondary experience after an initial infilling which we are baptised in The Holy Spirit. Jesus said this encounter with The Holy Spirit will give us power to preach the gospel, perform miracles and persevere amongst trials and challenges to be witnesses to the very end of our journey, until we see Jesus face to face.

The baptism in the Holy Spirit and ongoing infilling of the Holy Spirit is something we can ask and desire for in our relationship with God. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. 4 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

Luke 8:46
But Jesus said, “Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me.”

1 Corinthians 4:20
20 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power.

Romans 15:18-19
I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me in leading the Gentiles to obey God by what I have said and done— 19 by the power of signs and wonders, through the power of the Spirit of God. This has been displayed all the way through the scriptures. The first account of this is found in Exodus 31:1-5 when The Holy Spirit came upon Bezalel to create and craft The Tabernacle.

Matthew Chapter 3 records Jesus baptism, during which it says The Holy Spirit descended upon Him. From this moment forward, Jesus operated in the anointing of The Holy Spirit to preach about The Kingdom of God, perform signs, wonders and miracles for The Kingdom of God.

By putting our trust and faith in Him as saviour and lord of our lives, we are now anointed by the same Holy Spirit to do what Jesus did.

Jonny encouraged us to live by the following principles in order to see the anointing activated in our lives:

- Believe and trust the word of God
- Live in intimacy with Jesus
- Pursue holiness

Key Scriptures:

Luke 4:18-19
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
    because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s

Exodus 31:1-5
Then the Lord said to Moses, 2 “See, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, 3 and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills— 4 to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, 5 to cut and set stones, to work in wood, and to engage in all kinds of crafts.

1 Samuel 16:13
So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them. When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.” 40 Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.” “Tell me, teacher,” he said. 41 “Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.42 Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?” 43 Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.” “You have judged correctly,” Jesus said. 44 Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. 46 You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. 47 Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. At the end of Chapter 1 Paul has encouraged The Church to stand firm amidst the persecution they are experiencing. In Chapter 2 Paul switches the focus from external persecution to internal relationships, encouraging The Church to guard unity in their internal relationships. The reality is that where people gather there will be conflict, even in The Church. The Church is a place where imperfect people have encountered a perfect God and are on the journey of being changed into Christ likeness. We have to intentionally guard unity because the enemy desires to bring division. Jonny encouraged us to guard unity to prevent the affects which division brings:
- Isolation
- Individualism
- Influence

Paul encourages unity by living in humility and service to one another. Paul uses Jesus’ example of humility and service to spur us on to live a life of humility and service to one another.

The world views greatness when we are being served. Jesus views greatness when we humble ourselves in service to others.

This message can be summarised in this sentence:

Humility and service was the way of Jesus, therefore it is the way of His followers.

Key Scriptures:

Philippians 2:1-8
Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 7 rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!

Mark 9:35
Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.”

Mark 10:45
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Hebrews 12:2
And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. From the very outset of announcing His Kingdom hear on Earth, Jesus promised that His followers we would be persecuted and that this is very much a sign of the times until His return. True to Jesus’ words, since its inception, The Church has been Persecuted and this is still happening around The Would today. Persecution of Christians is the visible outworking of Satan’s Kingdom of Darkness trying to discourage and prevent The Kingdom of God advancing in The World. Satan persecutes Christians through people and governments. As a follower of Jesus here in Geelong, Australia we are far removed from the reality of persecution. In our context of following Jesus, we are not yet being persecuted but rather opposed and challenged. This is happening as we live under a government who have established laws which oppose the truth of scripture. How do we navigate this? We follow the example of The Early Church who despite persecution continued to grow, multiply and advance The Kingdom of God. Throughout the scriptures, we are continually warned to NOT be deceived, to not be led astray by the schemes of the enemy. This can look like the enemy trying to twist the Word of God - through false teachers or prophets, through strange signs and wonders. We will see evil called good and good called evil - and we need to be able to push against the narrative that speaks against the Truth of the gospel revealed in Christ crucified.
We must be on guard against this. How do we do this?
1. We MUST know the Word of God. We must read it, memorise it, repeat it, teach it to our children.
2. We must 'test every spirit' and ask the Spirit to lead us into all truth (John 16). We need DISCERNMENT in these days to be able to identify deceptive spirits/narratives.
3. We need to look at the 'Fruit' in the lives of those around us that we allow to speak into our lives - whether online or in our own lives. Is it good fruit or bad fruit.
4. We MUST love those around us. Our battle is not against flesh and blood. We must be a light to the people around us. Daily, we see events happening which can make us ask ‘God what is your plan in all of this?’. The good news is that God does have a plan through it all. Many of the events we see around the world were prophesied about in scripture - in Matthew Chapter 24 Jesus prophesied about wars, famine, earthquakes, Christian’s being persecuted and martyred for their faith, events which must take place before Jesus’ second coming. Whilst what is happening in the world may seem daunting, as followers of Jesus we have the hope and faith that it all points to Jesus’ second coming. Since Christ ascended back to The Father (Acts 1:9) we have been living in the end times, which is the period of time between Christs ascension and His return. As Christians we can see prophecy being fulfilled in real time. As this happens and we interpret the signs of the times, we know that God is faithful to His promise and at the right time Jesus will return to establish His Kingdom reign on Earth.

How do we navigate the signs of the times? Paul encouraged The Church at Thessalonica to do these 3 things:

1. Turn to God from idols
2. Serve the living and true God
3. Wait for His Son from Heaven

Key Scriptures:

Matthew 16:1-4
The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven. He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ 3 and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.[a] 4 A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.” Jesus then left them and went away.

Matthew Chapter 24:4-11
Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. 5 For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many.6 You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.7 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of birth pains. “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. 10 At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11 and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13 but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. 14 For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15 According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.

1 Thessalonians 1:8-10
The Lord’s message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia—your faith in God has become known everywhere. Therefore we do not need to say anything about it, 9 for they themselves report what kind of reception you gave us. They tell how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God,10 and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead—Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath.

YouTube Link for Service:

Sunday Service

Group Reflection Questions:

What do you feel God saying to you?

What can you do about it?

What is an actionable plan you can put in place to help yourself respond to God?

Who can keep you accountable?

Prayer

The message focussed on Joshua, the leader God to chose to lead The Nation of Israel into The Promised Land.

The sermon was focussed on Joshua Chapter 24:14-15. In these verses, Joshua is close to death and so brings the whole nation of Israel including the leaders, priests and judges for a moment of public recommitment to God. Joshua encourages the people reminding them of Gods faithfulness and all He had fulfilled in bringing them out of slavery in Egypt and into The Promised Land. Joshua makes a declaration of faith for him and his family that they will serve the lord and encourages The Nation of Israel to choose that day and everyday who they will serve.

Ultimately, Jonny encouraged us that living a life of worship is choosing everyday to serve Jesus and make Him number 1 in our lives.

Jonny had 3 encouragements from this passage:

1. We have a choice
- God gives us free will and the choice to serve Him. This is a daily choice we have to make.

2. It begins in our home
- We all have influence and we are to use our influence to pray for those under our care and model to them what it is to follow Jesus.
- Jonny encouraged the men around the influence they have in shaping and forming their children’s decision to follow Jesus and continue with this throughout their lives. A key factor in this was a Father modelling attending and engaging in a church community.

3. The power of recommitment
- As followers of Jesus, we can at anytime make a recommitment to God once again affirming Him as number 1 in our lives. This pleases the heart of God.

Key Scriptures:

Joshua 24:14-15
“So fear the Lord and serve him wholeheartedly. The message focussed on the story of the Israelites creating a golden calf and worshipping it while Moses was on Mt Sinai.

The story demonstrated our tendency towards idolatry and how we can often look to replace God in our lives. This can happen through elevating SELF above the voice and will of God in our lives. It can happen through allowing the ways of the World to influence us or even through peer- pressure - allowing the approval of others to dictate our decisions, life-style and affections. The story also showed how we can often lean towards idolising or worshipping the blessings that God has provided in our lives - rather than the one who gives them. We worship the GIVER not the GIFTS.

God is calling us to cut off these 'idols' in our lives and to trust that HE is enough for us. What is it in your life that you need to let go of. Often the most difficult things to let go of are the ones that have become idols to us.

Key Scriptures:

Exodus 32: 1 - 8 - Check it out in your Bible or APP.

Exodus 20:4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5 You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God.

Matthew 22:37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’

Romans 12:1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.

John 3:30 He must become greater; I must become less.

Romans 12:2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

1 Corinthians 10:23 “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive.

Exodus 32:2-4
Aaron answered them, “Take off the gold earrings that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me.” 3 So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron. 4 He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, “These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.”

Exodus 12 35-36
The people of Israel had also done as Moses told them, for they had asked the Egyptians for silver and gold jewelry and for clothing. 36 And the Lord had given the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they let them have what they asked. The story of King David bringing the Ark of the Covenant into Jerusalem is a great example of doing a 'good thing' the wrong way.

Key points that we can learn from the story:
- Let's not allow familiarity with the presence of God lead to irreverence, complacency or apathy in our lives. We need to honour God with awe and reverence.
- Knowing the Word of God and inquiring of God about HIS ways is going to help us to live life the right way.
- We are now a priesthood, called to minister to God and people, and we must consecrate ourselves. We are called to live 'set apart' with clean hands and a pure heart.
- The fact that we carry the presence of God should impact how we live our day to day lives.
- The priests in the OT were to carry the Ark (and God's presence) on their shoulders. For us now, carrying the presence of God with us might feel heavy at times. We need to feel the weight of a life lived for God - and also realise the privilege this is.
- A life carrying the presence of God with us, a life of worship to Him, is not going to be comfortable or convenient.
- Let's remember God is a God of second chances.
- As we worship Him, we have to let go of any ego, pride, agenda.

Key Scriptures:

Romans 12: 1
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.

2 Samuel 6
The whole chapter

Hebrews 12:28-29
28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, 29 for our “God is a consuming fire.”

1 Chronicles 15:12-15
12 He said to them, “You are the heads of the Levitical families; you and your fellow Levites are to consecrate yourselves and bring up the ark of the Lord, the God of Israel, to the place I have prepared for it. 13 It was because you, the Levites, did not bring it up the first time that the Lord our God broke out in anger against us. We did not inquire of him about how to do it in the prescribed way.” 14 So the priests and Levites consecrated themselves in order to bring up the ark of the Lord, the God of Israel. 15 And the Levites carried the ark of God with the poles on their shoulders, as Moses had commanded in accordance with the word of the Lord.

For Deeper study
Exodus 25:10-22
{Information about the Ark of the Covenant}

Numbers 4:1-20
{Information about how the Ark is to be transported}

1 Samuel 4,5,6
{Tells the account of the Ark being stolen by the Philistines and returned to Israel}

YouTube Link for Service:

Sunday Service

Group Reflection Questions:

What encouraged or challenged you from the message?

What do you feel like God is saying to you?

What is one action point you can apply to your life?

Is there someone you can share this action point with to keep you accountable?

Prayer

Worship only God!”

Isaiah 29:13
These people come near to me with their mouth and honour me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They were clothed in white robes and held palm branches in their hands. 10 And they were shouting with a great roar,

“Salvation comes from our God who sits on the throne
    and from the Lamb!”
11 And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living beings. And they fell before the throne with their faces to the ground and worshiped God. 12 They sang,

“Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom
    and thanksgiving and honor
and power and strength belong to our God
    forever and ever! Amen.”

Romans 12:1
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.

YouTube Link for Service:

Sunday Service

Group Reflection Questions:

What encouraged or challenged you from the message?

What do you feel like God is saying to you?

What is one action point you can apply to your life?

Is there someone you can share this action point with to keep you accountable?

Prayer
