It’s right under our noses - our words carry immense weight. But knowing how and when to speak is rarely black and white.

This particularly became a point of focus when I found myself being challenged. It became known to me that someone I knew and cared about was pursuing a lifestyle that was incompatible with wholeheartedly following God.

I wrestled deeply with how to respond. Blank acceptance didn't feel right, nor did being harsh or hardened. I had also realised that I didn’t have the kind of relationship to have a natural platform to speak directly into their life.

How do you approach a situation like that?

I figured if I was going to get into trouble for either going too hard or being too kind, erring on the side of kindness was the better option: to value the life God made and wants to save.

There are other situations where we do have the standing, the history, and the relational credit to guide, challenge, or even confront someone. It requires discernment as to what is appropriate.

If we want to lead well with our speech, we have to recognise what the situation demands, moving between two vital modes:

1. Championing What is Good
Paul wrote: "Therefore encourage one another and build one another up" (1 Thess 5:11).
It helps to encourage those things that are good, the things you’d like to see more of. Noticing when someone makes a wise decision, shows integrity under pressure, or does the hard yards behind the scenes—and letting them know.

2. The Art of Courteous Challenge
When we do have the relationship to offer correction, how we do it matters. Proverbs 15:1 reminds us that "a soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger."

We can think that being blunt, sharp, or brutal is okay. However, scripture shows that being restrained is better.

Colossians 4:6 says, "Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt."

When you have the standing to provide a challenge, do it privately, calmly, and with the clear intent to really help. A wise reproof, delivered with genuine respect and courtesy, is something the wise will welcome.

Ephesians 4:29:
"Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear."

Let’s be men whose speech can act as a healing medicine. Let us look out for people doing something well & find ways to encourage them.

The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

Genesis 1:26-27
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

Have you ever been caught in a rip?

When I was a kid I remember swimming in the ocean. The beach was too crowded from all the tourists so my friend and I went further down the beach than we usually went. After swimming for a while I realized that I had made my way into a rip. Being a decent swimmer, I tried to swim out. It didn’t take me long to realise that, despite my best efforts, I wasn’t getting any closer to the shore. My energy was running low and panic was setting in. I remember looking over at my laughing friend and calling out. My mate swam over into the rip and guided me out, laughing at me all the way.

I remember being so relieved as he swam over but also full of rage at the same time.

The picture the Bible starts with is one of the Deep. Black waters of nothingness. (The Hebrew word used here is tehom: meaning deep, abyss, depths). This is a place of chaos, a place that nobody could survive in, a churning rip of dark water ready to take you out.

But over the Deep hovers God. No longer is this place called the Deep. It’s now referred to as “waters” (Hebrew: mayim). No longer are these waters a place of chaos, no longer is it a place of fear and darkness. Now it’s just regular water.

God being there transformed the Deep.

The very first image you see in the Bible is one of God bringing peace.

Wherever God is; there is peace.

We are made in God’s image, made to imitate Him, to emulate Him and to do the things He does throughout the earth.

One of the coolest things about being a man, I think, is the way we can shape atmospheres and groups of people by bringing peace. God created us to rule and to reign, to carry authority wherever we go. If we use this authority correctly it will bring peace.

When you’re disagreeing with your spouse, or under a deadline at work, or raising kiddos, or just dead tired, you have the ability to bring peace. Your presence in a situation can be enough to change atmospheres, break down walls and bring calm to the people in your life.

This doesn’t just take self-control. It relies on us working on our stuff and being fuelled by the presence of God. If we allow God to bring peace to our inner world we’re going to see his peace flow through us into places and people that need it.

Peace out!

In order for us to abide and walk in our appointing as new covenant Christians we need to wear the full armour.

The shoes of Readiness come from the Gospel of Peace.

Discuss Objective Peace v Subjective Peace.
The peace of the bible is Objective Peace – God through Jesus Christ has reconciled us to Himself. The penalty of sin has been paid on our behalf and we have been made right with God.
Subjective peace is our experience of peace and based on the environment or our perspective.

We cannot achieve subjective peace without first having peace with God. The pursuit of peace without God is the same deceit of the garden – that we can somehow achieve fullness and freedom beyond God.

Biblical peace gives us identity in Christ that grounds us and enable us to be flexible, tough and have grip in all of life’s terrains – just like the roman soldiers shoes.

Biblical peace leads to readiness! This challenges our desire for comfort and motivates us to share the gospel with those around us.

Key Scriptures:

Ephesians 6:10-17 ESV
John 14:27
Matthew 28:18-20

YouTube Link for Service:

Sunday Service

Group Reflection Questions:

What do you feel God saying to you?

What can you do about it?

What is an actionable plan you can put in place to help yourself respond to God?

Who can keep you accountable?

Prayer

And we might think getting angry at someone is justifiable but ultimately that angry thought has the same DNA as murder.

This is why Proverbs tells us to “Guard our heart” with the admonition “for everything you do flows from it”. This is good counsel for us but would also have been for The Older Son.

The grace and favour shown to his brother triggered an angry response. Through all the years of faithful service, his actions were contrary to a heart that was likely frustrated and aggrieved by a brother who neglected his responsibilities.

On one level, it is easy to be doing the right thing in church life while under the surface in our heart be carrying sinful thought life DNA. It is only spending time in God’s presence through having a daily prayer life, that the Holy Spirit can work in our hearts to repair our brokenness and allow us to pursue whole heartedly the things of God.

Using the image of the breastplate of righteousness, he highlights the importance of guarding our hearts, as the direction of our lives flows from what captures our devotion and affection. While we have already received the righteousness of Christ through faith, we are also called to actively live it out, to become what we already are. This means not simply knowing the truth of God's Word but practising it daily through forgiveness, generosity, truthfulness, self control, encouragement, and lives that reflect the character of Jesus. As believers walk in righteousness, they increasingly resemble Christ and demonstrate the reality of their new identity. Paul warns that ongoing sin and compromise can create opportunities for the enemy to gain influence, but a life marked by righteousness protects the heart and frustrates the devil's schemes. Every act of obedience becomes an act of spiritual warfare, strengthening our ability to stand firm when opposition comes. As we faithfully put on the breastplate of righteousness each day, we practise righteousness and deny the devil opportunity.

Key Scriptures:

Ephesians 6:10–17
Proverbs 4:23
Ephesians 4:24–27
2 Corinthians 2:10–11

YouTube Link for Service:

Sunday Service

Group Reflection Questions:

What do you feel God saying to you?

What can you do about it?

What is an actionable plan you can put in place to help yourself respond to God?

Who can keep you accountable?

Prayer

Across the world we are the answer to so many peoples prayers through our mission partners as they meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs through good news of The Gospel. However our responsibility doesn’t finish with our financial giving to our mission partners, we have each been given the individual responsibility to fulfil The Great Commission. Sunday was also Pentecost Sunday, a celebration of The Holy Spirit being poured out on the first believers and all believers ever since. Why was the Holy Spirit poured out? For the purpose of living fulfilling The Great Commission, preaching The Gospel and making disciples of Jesus.

Following the example of the friends in Luke Chapter 5 who brought their friend to the feet of Jesus, Jonny’s encouragement and challenge was simple - who is your one? Who is the one person you are committed to praying to know Jesus and receive salvation? As a Church we wrote those names on post tick notes and we will store them in a locked box under the stage. Every week when we pray, worship and preach The Word we are believing in faith for them to be saved.

Share with your Small Group who your one is and take time to pray for them together.

Key Scriptures:

Acts 1:8
But you will receive power when The Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will by my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the Earth.

Luke 4:18
The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
    because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.

Luke 5:17-26
One day Jesus was teaching, and Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there. They had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with Jesus to heal the sick. 18 Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus. 19 When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.20 When Jesus saw their faith, he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.” 21 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, “Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”22 Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? 23 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 24 But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” 25 Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God. 26 Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.

Planting is a common metaphor in scripture, and images of planting are often used to implore faithfulness, trust, patience and perseverance. Galatians 6:9 urges us, “Let us not grow weary in doing good, for in due time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." James 5:7 declares, "Be patient brothers, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient until it receives the early and late rains." This patience is rooted in faith that God will fulfill His promises.

My grandfather was a faithful planter. First a wheat planter, and then a tree planter. I grew up on the farm my grandfather grew up on. He grew up on the farm his grandfather grew up on. When my ancestors arrived in the 1850s the land was covered in pre-colonial trees. Faithful as they were to Genesis 1:28, they subdued and cleared the land to grow wheat. For a few generations they were successful, until by the time my father was born high salt levels in the soil meant rapidly declining wheat yields. So, my grandfather stopped planting wheat and began planting trees, River Red Gums. By the time I was a boy these Gums were fully grown and propagating (self-seeding) a forest of saplings along the creek. Bird life was diverse and abundant; salt levels had plummeted, soil quality had improved dramatically and wheat production in adjacent paddocks was booming again. I had the privilege of returning as a 40-year-old in 2022 to see that the saplings of my childhood were now mature trees propagating their own 3rd generation saplings! My grandfather’s faithful planting, and the natural ways of God’s creation - soil and growth supported by seasonal rains and sunshine - had dramatically transformed the environment. What was on its way to resembling Ezekiel's valley of dry bones (ch. 37) was now resmebling something more like Eden! Grandpa died over 30 years ago, and yet the legacy of his faithful planting lives on.

The same can be true of us regarding faith. What seeds are you planting? Dads will naturally think of faithfully discipling and investing in our children, and this is significant, but I believe God wants us to consider even more than this. What about when we pray for people of peace, and the ways we disciple them and others? Are they colleagues and/or clients in our workplaces? Our neighbours? Are we volunteering and disciplining not only in the church but also outside of it? Just as Jesus sent the 72 in pairs (Luke 10:1), and just as we are unique parts working together as the same body (1 Cor 12, Rom 12), who else has Jesus called us to go with on mission?

Sometimes we get to experience and bear witness to the faithful planting of others. My foster sons’ birth mum was also a foster child. She and her siblings were fostered by a faithful Christian couple and yet they haven’t seen their now-adult foster children’s lives transformed by Jesus yet. They have told me about a faithful old woman who prayed for my foster sons’ birth mum and her siblings before they went into foster care. They told me about how they prayed that their foster daughter’s children would be placed with Christian foster carers (us!). And they have seen fruitfulness of that now long deceased lady’s prayers for this family displayed in the faith of our foster sons, including one’s baptism and public declaration of faith in Jesus. Just like my grandfather’s faithful tree planting, the legacy of this lady’s faithful decades-ago prayers continues to be fruitful.

Remember, the goal is not to see fruit or the harvest, encouraging as that is. No, all we need to be is prayerfully, then actively, faithful. May we be faithful planters, and bear witness to the faithful planting of others. As Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 3:6-7, "I planted the seed and Apollos watered it, but God made it grow. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow."

Whether it be a buffet breakfast, a 3-Piece Feed from the old reliable dirty bird; or one of Kenny’s delicious Thai recipes that gets you salivating more than a dog with a bone! I know I do!

But if we’re honest, most of us blokes are just as happy with a cheap parmi (yes, I said that correctly!) from the pub. Nothing too fancy.

But Psalm 23 paints a different picture.

David describes God as a host, preparing a table, setting a feast, inviting him to sit. Not reheatable meals or leftovers. A full table. Abundant. Intentional. Personal.

And here’s the kicker - it’s in the presence of his enemies!

This isn’t a peaceful, quiet dinner. It’s a table set right in the middle of tension, pressure and opposition.

And yet… David sits.

When we are invited to someone’s house for dinner, we cannot open the host’s refrigerator and grab whatever we want to eat. We depend on the host to place dinner on the table for us. We wait to be offered food and drink.

And it got me thinking, the statement, “You prepare a table before me,” highlights David’s dependence on God! But sometimes we feed ourselves with things that aren’t from the table that was prepared for us because we get distracted by snacking on work, anxieties, stress, our own egos, or habits we know aren’t good for us. Or sometimes, we simply don’t sit at the table with Him in the first place because we don’t give Him the time.

Meanwhile, the table is still set.
The seat is still there.
The one who booked the table.
Prepared the meal.
Sat down to dine with you.
And the reservation cost Him everything.

David said to the Lord, “You anoint my head with oil” because he regarded himself as the Lord’s special guest. We too need to come back to the table that we’ve been invited to, and sit. We’ve been invited to dine now and forever at the Lord’s table and to receive His favourable anointing.

“You anoint my head with oil” speaks of the Lord’s ministry to refresh David’s heart, particularly in light of the immediate threat of enemies. David imagines himself sitting at the Lord’s banquet table while his rivals gather all around.

But he’s not focused on them: he is locked in, gazing into the eyes of the King. Being in God’s presence rejuvenated David, giving him the strength to face all the challenges and pressures of life. His enemies could snarl and roar all they wanted, but in the shelter of God’s presence, David would feast and be refreshed.

So I ask you these questions:
- What is the enemy doing to pull you away from the table right now?
- What needs to shift so you can sit with God again?
- Who can you talk to that will pray with you about silencing your enemies?

I’ll leave you with this quote. Louie Giglio has an incredible book that shares the same title as this that I read last year, and I want to encourage you with this today. Are you ready?

"Don’t give the enemy a seat at your table!"

Curious and enthralled after analysing Jewish prophecy, navigating by the star(s), the wise men had likely travelled for several months to visit the true king. The gifts these foreign men brought young Yeshua would prove to be deeply prophetic.

This is in stark contrast with the Jewish leaders at the time who had access to all the prophecies about the Messiah but didn’t seem to want to follow through in pursuit of a true life in Jesus.

This can be me sometimes. These are the days we pray for! The rapid growth in believers begins to create pastoral challenges, in particular the care of the widows. The Apostle’s meet to make a plan. The had a responsibility to care for the people under their leadership, but also to not neglect prayer and the teaching of the Word to continue reaching and discipling people for The Kingdom of God. They came to the conclusion that they needed to equip and release other believers to oversee the food program for the widows in the community. Acts 6:7 tells us the outcome of this was the church continuing to to grow and expand!

Jonny encouraged us that God has an expansive vision and mission for The Church. That all would hear The Gospel, all would respond and all would find a Church home. At Grace we should be expecting and anticipating this to happen and we would be ready together to welcome, care and disciple those who connect with our Church family.

Jonny encouraged us that just like in Acts Chapter 6, it is a team effort to see The Kingdom of God advance - everyone has a role to play. In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul described this as being part of a body. Every part of our human body has a function and plays a role, which is also true for the body of Christ. God has given us gifts to serve one another with and contribute to His Church.

Jonny challenged us that their are barriers which can get in the way of us fulfilling our role within the body:

- Busyness - we can lead full lives, resulting in being overwhelmed and overcommitted. At times, our serving or leading in The Church is what is sacrificed.
- Consumerism - the world around us has a consumeristic mindset which can lead us to come to church thinking about what we can receive rather than give.
- Clarity - we can be unsure where to start. The encouragement is just to start somewhere.

We need to reflect and consider if any of these are a reality in our life and take steps being part of the body and contribute to what God wants to do in and through you for The Kingdom of God.

Take some time to discuss this topic with your group, what has encouraged you and what challenges you.

Key Scriptures:

Acts 6:1-7
But as the believers rapidly multiplied, there were rumblings of discontent. The Greek-speaking believers complained about the Hebrew-speaking believers, saying that their widows were being discriminated against in the daily distribution of food. 2 So the Twelve called a meeting of all the believers. They said, “We apostles should spend our time teaching the word of God, not running a food program. 3 And so, brothers, select seven men who are well respected and are full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will give them this responsibility. 4 Then we apostles can spend our time in prayer and teaching the word.” 5 Everyone liked this idea, and they chose the following: Stephen (a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit), Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas of Antioch (an earlier convert to the Jewish faith). 6 These seven were presented to the apostles, who prayed for them as they laid their hands on them. 7 So God’s message continued to spread. The number of believers greatly increased in Jerusalem, and many of the Jewish priests were converted, too.

Acts 6:1
But as the believers rapidly multiplied, there were rumblings of discontent.

Ephesians 4:11-12
Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. 12 Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ.

Acts 6:3
And so, brothers, select seven men who are well respected and are full of the Spirit and wisdom. I remember watching my dad and his mates gather regularly, sitting under a tree, catching up on the week. They’d share stories, talk through challenges, and exchange ideas on how to navigate struggles of life. It wasn’t formal, but it was powerful. That was brotherhood. That was community.

There’s an African proverb that says, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” That’s something I saw lived out from a young age. But somewhere along the way, many of us as men have drifted from that. We carry stress, pressure, and struggles on our own, thinking that’s strength. But the truth is, we were never designed to do life alone.

“Two are better than one and if either of them falls, one can help the other up.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9–10). Real community is built in the hard times.

“Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.” (Romans 12:15). Anyone can show up when life is good, but real brotherhood is revealed when life gets tough.

We also need accountability. “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Our Theme for this year (Proverbs 27:17). The right men in your life won’t just support you, they’ll challenge you, sharpen you, and keep you grounded.

And it’s bigger than just us. The next generation is watching. “We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord…” (Psalm 78:4). The way we live, lead, and show up in community is shaping what they believe is possible.

So, here’s the challenge:

Who are you showing up for?

Who’s walking alongside you?

Who’s sharpening you?

He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!”
Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you.” For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”
When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.

Have you ever wondered whether this verse is technically accurate? Iron doesn't actually sharpen iron - stone sharpens iron.

But a sharpening steel? That's different. A steel doesn't create a new edge. It straightens one that has been rolled over from use, returning the blade to its correct angle so it can cut again.

That distinction matters, because I believe it's exactly what this proverb is describing. The edge is made by Christ alone Jesus modelled it for us — He regularly withdrew to spend time with the Father. That intimacy was the source of everything He did. It is the same for us. Time in God's word and in prayer is what gives us our edge. It is not something another person can create in us.

But a sharp blade that goes to work will dull. Life in the world rolls the edge over. We don't lose our salvation - we lose our sharpness.

In John 13, Jesus washes the disciples' feet. When Peter objects - "Not just my feet, Lord, but my whole body!" — Jesus tells him something important: you are already clean. You do not need to be washed again.

But your feet still need washing from the dust of the road. When we gather together, we are not starting over, making a new edge. We are being restored — our edge straightened, our angle corrected, ready to cut again.

REFLECT THIS WEEK
• Where are you spending time with the Father to build your edge?
• Is there someone in your life who regularly straightens you - and do you let them?

Community won't give you an edge that only Christ can form.
But it will return you to it.
If you are feeling dull from the things of the world remember to sharpen.

The church has grown from 120 to 1000’s, as the preaching of The Gospel has been followed by signs, wonders and miracles. The disciples are boldly preaching The Gospel and advancing The Kingdom of God as ANOINTED followers of Jesus. At the end of Acts Chapter 4 and into Acts Chapter 5 we read this incredible account of the disciples displaying abundant generosity and charity to one another, some selflessly choosing to sell property so they can meet the needs of people within the early church community. This truely was an incredible move of Gods spirit within the early church! However, amidst all the incredible events taking place, Acts Chapter 5 tells us the story of how God took the lives of a married couple called Annanias and Sapphira (Read Acts 5:1-14 to recap the story). Whilst it is mentioned a lot, money is not the central theme of this story, instead it is centred around Annanias and Sapphira’s lack of integrity and Gods holiness. Annanias and Sapphira were more concerned about their public reputation as opposed to having a pure heart before God. On the surface what seems to be something which is excusable, God uses this as an act of purification to in still in to the church that He truely cares deeply about our holiness displayed through living lives of integrity. This account in scripture can be somewhat jolting, however it is a great reminder of the God we serve: 1) God is never changing, He is the same God across the Old and New Testament (Malachi 3:6) 2) God cares deeply about our integrity and holiness - we are called to be Holy as He is Holy (1 Peter 1:15-16 3) God wants His Church to support one another to grow in holiness through accountability and prayer together (James 5:16). This was a heavy but much needed message for The Church in 2026 - to not compromise but continue to confront sin and live lives of integrity and holiness.

Take some time to discuss this topic with your group, what has encouraged you and what challenges you.

Key Scriptures:

Acts 4:36-37
Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means “son of encouragement”), 37 sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles’ feet.

Acts 5:1-14
Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. 2 With his wife’s full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles’ feet. Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heartthat you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? 4 Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.” When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. And great fear seized all who heard what had happened. 6 Then some young men came forward, wrapped up his body, and carried him out and buried him. About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 8 Peter asked her, “Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?” “Yes,” she said, “that is the price.” Peter said to her, “How could you conspire to test the Spirit of the Lord? Listen! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.” At that moment she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband. 11 Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events. The apostles performed many signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon’s Colonnade.13 No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people. 14 Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number.

Proverbs 28:6
Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity
than a rich man who is crooked in his ways.

James 5:16
Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. That is 53% of all daylight hours. It is a significant share of our time, but more importantly it takes a significant share of our energy, both physical and mental.

For the last few decades, we have been taught to chase a work and life balance that subtly separates our jobs from our sense of purpose. Work is often framed as a necessary burden, something to manage carefully so it does not steal our life. This mindset can slowly lead to apathy, dissatisfaction, or even resentment toward the very workplace God has positioned us in.

Scripture presents a different picture.

Work is described in the Bible as a fundamental part of a man’s life, not something separate from it (Genesis 2:15). We are encouraged to work willingly and diligently as though working for God Himself (Colossians 3:23). Work is also meant to be balanced with rest and the enjoyment of God’s good creation in our daily and weekly rhythms (Isaiah 58:13 to 14). This includes enjoying time with our friends, families, and the natural world God has made.

Jeremiah wrote to God’s people while they were living in exile in Babylon. They were far from home, under ungodly authority and waiting decades for restoration. Yet God did not tell them to withdraw or simply survive. He told them to seek the peace, prosperity, and welfare of the city where He had placed them, and to pray for it (Jeremiah 29:7). God made it clear that the flourishing of that city was directly connected to their own wellbeing.

The truth is that we are all waiting, like the Israelites, for Jesus to return. In that waiting, Jesus calls us to be kingdom minded, focusing on sharing the life and ways of Christ through discipleship and love. That it started out as manageable but changed to be restrictive and then oppressive. I ended up wanting a stable, peaceful life. I could see that lack has a burden, doing nothing gets nothing and that chasing wealth has its own risks and they could result in real damage. Now, in retrospect, I can better see God’s hand in my life. Back then - what I had was hope! As I became an adult, the things I wanted to get sorted out were marriage, money and a place to call home.

The Bible says, “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much” (Luke 16:10). I wanted to be trustworthy. I had little! I came into the workforce in the depths of the 1990s recession. I had low income, a difficult employment market, no prospect of handouts, no inheritance to look forward to. What I did have was a strong drive to provide for my family. Progress came slowly, often through mistakes, but always through learning.

I found debt a necessity to get a home. Paying down debt brought increasing peace - not just financially, but emotionally. “The borrower is slave to the lender” (Proverbs 22:7). I did go through that cycle several times, but it was always with less risk overall.

My intent was good, but I was untrained and largely unguided. My learning came over time. Often, I worked at implementing just one learning really well. For a long time, it seemed I was not making any great progress. Small, consistent habits compounded over time. “The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance” (Proverbs 21:5). The opportunities change with the times, but consistent good habits are always useful.

One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is contentment. It provides freedom. Learning to live on less is not easy, but it brought me peace and clarity. “Godliness with contentment is great gain” (1 Timothy 6:6). I came to understand choosing a life simpler than I could afford was empowering. That helped me make better decisions for the longer‑term.

How to transfer on those things that made the difference was the challenge. I’d seen that wealth could spoil people. That people with little could have great joy and be generous with little. I arrived at the conclusion that the best thing I could do was hand on the tools and knowledge I’d learnt, so they could have it to draw upon as appropriate… and that everyone needs to find their own peace - the true peace - the peace for all circumstances and all times.

“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:7

What an incredible event! Jonny preached a message helping us understand if God still heals today like He did in The Bible.

To understand why their is healing, we must first understand why their is suffering and sickness. God created a good and perfect world which has been corrupted by sin. All suffering and sickness is a result of sin, which can be explained in three different ways:

-General Sin
Romans 5:12
Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned

-Personal Sin
1 Corinthians 11:30
That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep.

-Demonic Sin
See the story of Job

Despite suffering and sickness, The New Testament teaches us that God can and does still heal today. Does this mean everyone Christian will be healed? In this life no. In eternity, yes. Whilst their are so many accounts of people being healed in the scriptures and even today, not every person did receive healing in the scriptures and we know this to be true today also.

The truth about healing is this, God will heal every Christian in one of 3 ways:
-Immediately in a Miracle
-Gradually through Medicine
-Eventually in Glory

We are called to pray and ask God to heal because He is able to. But whatever His answer maybe, we are to trust in His nature and character which is good and faithful.

Jonny finished by sharing a prayer written by Ps Josh Howerton to help those who may feel disillusioned or disappointed that God hasn’t answered their prayer for healing the way they thought He would, see below:

Father I know you are God and that you never lie or abandon your children, but it sure feels like you did in this situation. It looks like you didn’t keep your promises to me and it feels like your love failed me. I know my perception is wrong because you are always good. I need you to help me trust your heart when I can’t understand your actions. Please heal my heart and deliver me from this disappointment.

Take some time to discuss this topic with your group, what has encouraged you and what challenges you.

Key Scriptures:

Acts Chapter 3:1-10;16

One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer—at three in the afternoon. 2 Now a man who was lame from birthwas being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts. 3 When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. 4 Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Our relationships can be broad and wide: family, marriage, parenting, friends, work colleagues, church community. The reality is that relationships can be both beautiful and painful. Ps Nick and Meredith shared with us that we each carry insecurity, immaturity and brokenness whether we realise it or not and we each bring these into our relationships with one another.

Becoming aware of our insecurity, immaturity and brokenness is the first step. Working through them is a life time journey of discipleship which we are all on. The good news is that Jesus desires for us to be whole and healthy. This happens through the work of the Holy Spirit, healthy Church community and taking some intentional and practical steps.

Ps Nick and Meredith shared that Gods desire is not that we would be just be healthy spiritually, but we would be healthy across all areas of our lives. They introduced some practical and holistic ‘pillars’ to help us become self aware and grow in our wholeness. These are Physical, Emotional, Spiritual, Relational and Financial. We were encouraged to pause once per month and mark out of 10 how you are going in each of these areas, find someone who you can chat to about how you are going and consider practical steps to address areas which may be on the lower side.

Some questions for you to consider are below:

1. Physical

- Am I treating my body as a temple of the Holy Spirit in how I use my body and what I consume?

- Am I am able to serve God well physically?

- Mark out of 10 how you are feeling physically. If it is below a 7, what changes do you need to make?

2. Emotional

- Am I experiencing any extreme emotions often such as anxiety, anger, sadness. If so, why do you think this is?

- Am I able to process the emotions I am experiencing appropriately?

- Do my emotions negatively impact the lives of those around me?

- Mark out of 10 how you are feeling emotionally. If it is below a 7, what do you need to do?

3. Spiritual

- Am I in a regular rhythm of connecting with God through prayer, Bible reading and worship?

- Am I in a regular rhythm of connecting with other believers to encourage and be encouraged in my faith e.g Sunday Church and mid-week Small Group

- Am I confident and secure in my identity as a Child of God?

- Mark out of 10 how you are feeling spiritually. If it is below a 7, what do you need to do?

4. Relational

- Am I enjoying the relationships I have in my life?

- Do I have clear and appropriate boundaries where needed?

- Am I am experiencing a good balance in being able to contribute as well as receive in the relationships I have?

- Mark out of 10 how you are feeling relationally. If it is below a 7, what do you need to do?

5. Financial

- Am I stewarding well what God has given to me through budgeting?

- Am I able to enjoy the finances in my life through giving, saving and spending?

- Mark out of 10 how you are feeling financially. If it is below a 7, what do you need to do?

Take some time to discuss this with your group or someone you trust to support you in these areas.

Key Scriptures:

1 Thessalonians 5:23
May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. Some can juggle. Some can touch their toes. Some can cook a steak or a mean spag bog. Some can hit a 5 iron 150 metres. One skill that we all possess in our fallen state is the skill of self swindling.

Essentially it means we are fraudulent to ourselves. The word says in Jeremiah that “the heart is deceitful above all things”. In the spiritual life our inner man, our inner drive is actively impairing and deceiving us. The “self-swindler” is imbedded if you like into our internal organisation. A “spy” among our internal, personal workings. To achieve the life God has for us, facing this type of inner betrayal we need a tag team of help - the Holy Spirit and faithful friends.

Through the Anointed series currently as a church we are pressing into the active presence of the Holy Spirit in our Christian walk and His work is crucial to convict us in the areas where we fall short. Practically though, surrounding ourselves with the right relationships is also huge.

Proverbs 27 verse 6 says that “Faithful are the wounds of a friend”. The wounds that are faithful are the ones that shine a light on our blindspots that could stop us fulfilling the promises of God in our life.

If we are serious about living the calling God has for each of us as men, husbands, fathers and mates we need to ask the Holy Spirit and ourselves these two questions:
1. What blind spots do I have in my life?
2. Who am I being accountable to and giving permission to speak into my life hard truths?

People from other nations are now hearing about Jesus and what He has done for them.

The crowd ask a key question ‘What does this mean?’.

Peter, anointed by The Holy Spirit stands up and addresses the crowd. He delivers His address in 3 parts:

1. Explanation
- Peter explains to the crowd that what they are witnessing is a promise which was prophesied 800 years earlier by Joel found in Joel Chapter 2:28-32. God in this moment had poured out His Spirit upon all flesh!
- The world we live in today is changing at a rapid rate and people today are asking a similar question - ‘what does this mean?’. Jonny encouraged us that whilst the world around us is changing, we need to be ready to meet people where they are at and provide explanation to our hope and security found in Jesus who is never changing.

2. Gospel
- Peter then shares The Gospel explaining that Jesus who they crucified was God, He was put to death on the cross for our sins but this all happened according to Gods plan to save and rescue the world from sin!
- Peter then explains that Jesus wasn’t just resurrected but He was also exalted. To be exalted means to be put in a position of high power or authority.
- Jonny encouraged us that Jesus has been given all authority in heaven and on earth and as His sons and daughters we live under that authority. Therefore be bold and confident when you are faced with spiritual challenges as they all come under the dominion of Jesus.

3. Response

- The scripture says that after hearing all of this the people were cut to the heart and ask ‘what shall we do?’.

- Peter gives clear direction on what their next steps should be - repent and be baptised.

- To repent means to change your direction 180 degrees - turn away from doing life your way and instead choose to do life according to the way of Jesus’ Kingdom. This is a decision we make when we first put our trust in Jesus as saviour and lord and a decision we make daily afterwards, empowered by The Holy Spirit.

- Water Baptism is a public declaration of what God has done in your life, a physical sign of a spiritual reality. Your old life which has now been crucified and your new, resurrected life which has began in Christ.

Jonny encouraged the whole church that if you have put your faith in Jesus but haven’t been baptised, our next baptism service will be on Easter Sunday, April 5th. Is there anybody in your small group who can take this next step in their faith and be baptised on Easter Sunday?

Key Scriptures:

Acts 2:14-21
Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15 These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

17 “‘In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
18 Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
    and they will prophesy.
19 I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,
blood and fire and billows of smoke.
20 The sun will be turned to darkness
    and the moon to blood
before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
21 And everyone who calls
on the name of the Lord will be saved.’[a]

1 Peter 3:16
And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it. 16 But do this in a gentle and respectful way

Acts 2:17
Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.

Acts 2:22-36
22 “Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. 23 This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men,[b] put him to death by nailing him to the cross. 24 But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. 25 David said about him:

“‘I saw the Lord always before me.
Because he is at my right hand,
    I will not be shaken.
26 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
my body also will rest in hope,
27 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
you will not let your holy one see decay.
28 You have made known to me the paths of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence.’[c]
29 “Fellow Israelites, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day. 30 But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. 31 Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay.32 God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it.33 Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.34 For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said,

“‘The Lord said to my Lord:
    “Sit at my right hand
35 until I make your enemies
    a footstool for your feet.”’[d]
36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.”

Romans 3:23-26
For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.24 Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins.25 For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past, 26 for he was looking ahead and including them in what he would do in this present time. God did this to demonstrate his righteousness, for he himself is fair and just, and he makes sinners right in his sight when they believe in Jesus.

John 3:16
“For this is how God loved the world: He gave[a] his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

Acts 2:37-41
37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.” 40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.

YouTube Link for Service:

Sunday Service

Group Reflection Questions:

What do you feel God saying to you?

What can you do about it?

What is an actionable plan you can put in place to help yourself respond to God?

Who can keep you accountable?

Prayer

Jonny encouraged us around the importance of prayer individually and corporately, that prayer is the engine room of our faith and there is power when we gather to pray.

10 days after Jesus ascended, The Disciples were gathered once again when suddenly The Holy Spirit comes, appearing as tongues of fire on their heads. God has often shown up as fire throughout the scriptures. Each time He has appeared as fire it was to confirm His presence and affirm His ministry. Appearing again as fire was confirming His presence and affirming the ministry of the Holy Spirit.

Baptised in The Holy Spirit, The Disciples were given the ability to speak in tongues. The scriptures tell us that their are two expressions of speaking in tongues:

1. Unknown human language - the Holy Spirit gives us the ability to speak in other human languages for the purpose of preaching The Gospel as seen in Acts Chapter 2. In this way we are speaking tongues to communicate with other people.

2. Heavenly language - the Holy Spirit gives us the ability to pray and sing in a Heavenly Language, for the purpose of communicating with God.

Scriptures teaches us that speaking in tongues can be done both in private and public. However, Paul encourages us that if we are to speak in tongues in public, it should be done with an interpretation.

Jonny encouraged us that the gift of speaking in tongues is for everyone and available today to empower The Church for ministry and an intimate relationship with God.

Do you have a heavenly language?
