Made New: Identity in Christ – Week 3

Message Overview:

When we put our trust in Jesus as Saviour and Lord we are adopted into Gods family and now our identity is as a child of God – what an incredible truth! Being adopted into Gods family gives us incredible rights and privileges which affirm our identity as children of God. Now that we are children of God, Jonny encouraged us with these truths:

1. We have relationship with The Father: God is not just creator but our ‘Abba Father’ which is an endearing term to describe God as an intimate, close, caring Father who desires for us to be close to Him.

2. We have a Kingdom Inheritance: We are co-heirs with Jesus, which means we have access to all the Kingdom blessings available to us – peace, comfort, provision, protection, wisdom, eternal life to name a few.

3. We have a new family: We are adopted into Gods family, which is The Church. Church is not a service we attend but a family we connect with, worshiping and serving God together.

Key Scriptures:

Galatians 4:4-7 But when the set time had fully come,God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.[b]6 Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.
Ephesians 2:1-9
As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh[a] and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. 6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.
Ephesians 1:4-5
For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5 he[b] predestined us for adoption to sonship[c] through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will.
1 John 3:1
See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!
Romans 8:15
So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children.[a]Now we call him, “Abba, Father.”
Galatians 4:7
So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.
Galatians 3:28
There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
