Sunday Recap - Navigating The Signs of The Times

Navigating The Signs of The Times - Ps Jonny Kettle

Message Overview:

I think we can all agree the world is a crazy place! Daily, we see events happening which can make us ask ‘God what is your plan in all of this?’. The good news is that God does have a plan through it all. Many of the events we see around the world were prophesied about in scripture - in Matthew Chapter 24 Jesus prophesied about wars, famine, earthquakes, Christian’s being persecuted and martyred for their faith, events which must take place before Jesus’ second coming. Whilst what is happening in the world may seem daunting, as followers of Jesus we have the hope and faith that it all points to Jesus’ second coming.  Since Christ ascended back to The Father (Acts 1:9) we have been living in the end times, which is the period of time between Christs ascension and His return. As Christians we can see prophecy being fulfilled in real time. As this happens and we interpret the signs of the times, we know that God is faithful to His promise and at the right time Jesus will return to establish His Kingdom reign on Earth.

How do we navigate the signs of the times? Paul encouraged The Church at Thessalonica to do these 3 things:

1. Turn to God from idols
2. Serve the living and true God
3. Wait for His Son from Heaven

Key Scriptures:

Matthew 16:1-4
The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven. He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ 3 and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.[a] 4 A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.” Jesus then left them and went away.

Matthew Chapter 24:4-11
Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. 5 For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many.6 You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.7 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of birth pains. “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. 10 At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11 and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13 but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. 14 For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15 According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.

1 Thessalonians 1:8-10
The Lord’s message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia—your faith in God has become known everywhere. Therefore we do not need to say anything about it, 9 for they themselves report what kind of reception you gave us. They tell how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God,10 and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead—Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath.
