Sunday Recap - Sunday July 19th - Prayer and Fasting by Ps Jonny Kettle

Prayer and Fasting

Message Overview:

As we approach our annual 21 days of prayer and fasting from August 2nd - August 22nd, Jonny outlined the why, how and what for prayer and fasting.

Why prayer and fasting?
- We are a triune being: body, soul and spirit.
- Often we are lead by our body (flesh and sinful desires) and soul (mind, will and emotions) rather than our spirit (Holy Spirit in you).
- Fasting is a way of starving the flesh and soul whilst strengthening the spirit so we are able to live in alignment with Gods will for our life in a greater way.
- We fast to put each part of our being in their right place.

How should we fast?
- Complete Fast: Only liquids and no solid food
- Partial Fast: Remove certain meals of the day or food types
- Soul Fast: Remove all entertainment and replace that time reading, praying and worshipping

What should we fast for?
- Freedom from Bondage and Sin (The Disciples Fast) : Matthew 17:19;21
- Victory of the enemy (The Daniel Fast) : Daniel 10:1-3
- Restoration of what the Devil has stolen (The Ezra Fast) : Ezra 8:21
- Wisdom and direction for the future (The Paul Fast) : Acts 9:9

Discuss what challenged and encouraged you from this message and how you will engage in the upcoming time of prayer fasting.

Key Scriptures:

Matthew 6:16
When you fast

Matthew 9:14-15
Then John’s disciples came and asked him, “How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?” 15 Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.

Acts 13:2-3
As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, “Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” 3 Then, having fasted and prayed, and laid hands on them, they sent them away.

2 Corinthians 11:27
in weariness and toil, in sleeplessness often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness

Galatians 5:16-25
I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: [d]adultery, [e]fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, [f]murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 [g]gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

Matthew 17:19;21
Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?”

However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”

Daniel 10:1-3
In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia, a revelation was given to Daniel. The understanding of the message came to him in a vision. At that time I, Daniel, mourned for three weeks. 3 I ate no choice food; no meat or wine touched my lips; and I used no lotions at all until the three weeks were over

Ezra 8:21
There, by the Ahava Canal, I proclaimed a fast, so that we might humble ourselves before our God and ask him for a safe journey for us and our children, with all our possessions.

Acts 9:9
For three days he was blind, and did not eat or drink anything
