Sunday Recap - Pastor Georgie Kettle - 31 August 2025

Sunday 31 August 2025 – Pastor Georgie Kettle

Message Overview:

Last Sunday, Pastor Georgie continued our 'Living a Life of Worship' series. The message focussed on the story of the Israelites creating a golden calf and worshipping it while Moses was on Mt Sinai.

The story demonstrated our tendency towards idolatry and how we can often look to replace God in our lives. This can happen through elevating SELF above the voice and will of God in our lives. It can happen through allowing the ways of the World to influence us or even through peer- pressure - allowing the approval of others to dictate our decisions, life-style and affections. The story also showed how we can often lean towards idolising or worshipping the blessings that God has provided in our lives - rather than the one who gives them. We worship the GIVER not the GIFTS.

God is calling us to cut off these 'idols' in our lives and to trust that HE is enough for us. What is it in your life that you need to let go of. Often the most difficult things to let go of are the ones that have become idols to us.

Key Scriptures:

Exodus 32: 1 - 8  - Check it out in your Bible or APP.

Exodus 20:4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5 You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God.

Matthew 22:37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’

Romans 12:1  Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.

John 3:30  He must become greater; I must become less.

Romans 12:2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

1 Corinthians 10:23  “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive.

Exodus 32:2-4
Aaron answered them, “Take off the gold earrings that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me.” 3 So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron. 4 He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, “These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.”

Exodus 12 35-36
The people of Israel had also done as Moses told them, for they had asked the Egyptians for silver and gold jewelry and for clothing. 36 And the Lord had given the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they let them have what they asked. Thus they plundered the Egyptians.

QUOTE:
“An idol is anything more important to you than God. Anything that absorbs your heart and imagination more than God. Anything you seek to give you what only God can give.”
Tim Keller, Author of ‘Counterfeit Gods’
