Sunday Recap - Armour of God - Week 1 - Jared Howlett

Armour of God - Week 1

Message Overview:

We don’t struggle just against flesh and blood.

We are in a spiritual battle. Paul invites the church at Ephesus to see more than just their physical opponents but to know that there are spiritual forces (powers, Authorities, rulers) that are at work in the world.

Through Psalm 82 we see a picture of God presiding over the Divine Council. In the spiritual realm there are beings apart from God who he created and were made to serve a purpose. There has been a fall not just amongst people but amongst spiritual beings with some of these beings being in rebellion towards God.

According to the biblical worldview these fallen spiritual beings influence people and bring about chaos on the earth.

Paul encourages the church of Ephesus to put on the belt of truth.
The truth of the matter is Jesus has defeated death, darkness and spiritual oppressors on the Cross.
In Christ spiritual powers have been defeated and now await judgement when Christ returns

Key Scriptures:

Eph 6:10-13a ESV
11 Put on the whole armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armour of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth...

Psalm 82 ESV
A Psalm of Asaph.
1 God has taken his place in the divine council;
in the midst of the gods he holds judgment:
2 “How long will you judge unjustly
and show partiality to the wicked?
3 Give justice to the weak and the fatherless;
maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute.
4 Rescue the weak and the needy;
deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”

Psalm 82:6-8 ESV
6 I said, “You are gods,
sons of the Most High, all of you;
7 nevertheless, like men you shall die,
and fall like any prince.”a
8 Arise, O God, judge the earth;
for you shall inherit all the nations!

Psalm 86:8-10 ESV
There is none like you among the gods, O Lord,
nor are there any works like yours.
9 All the nations you have made shall come
and worship before you, O Lord,
and shall glorify your name.
10 For you are great and do wondrous things;
you alone are God.

Colossians 1:16-17 ESV
16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

Ephesians 6:12 ESV
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Luke 22:3 ESV Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve.
