Anointed: Acts Chapter 3, Does God heal today?

Message Overview:

Acts Chapter 3 opens up with the first detailed recording of a supernatural healing through The Apostles by the power of The Holy Spirit. What an incredible event! Jonny preached a message helping us understand if God still heals today like He did in The Bible.

To understand why their is healing, we must first understand why their is suffering and sickness. God created a good and perfect world which has been corrupted by sin. All suffering and sickness is a result of sin, which can be explained in three different ways:

-General Sin
Romans 5:12
Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned

-Personal Sin
1 Corinthians 11:30
That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep.

-Demonic Sin
See the story of Job

Despite suffering and sickness, The New Testament teaches us that God can and does still heal today. Does this mean everyone Christian will be healed? In this life no. In eternity, yes. Whilst their are so many accounts of people being healed in the scriptures and even today, not every person did receive healing in the scriptures and we know this to be true today also.

The truth about healing is this, God will heal every Christian in one of 3 ways:
-Immediately in a Miracle
-Gradually through Medicine
-Eventually in Glory

We are called to pray and ask God to heal because He is able to. But whatever His answer maybe, we are to trust in His nature and character which is good and faithful.

Jonny finished by sharing a prayer written by Ps Josh Howerton to help those who may feel disillusioned or disappointed that God hasn’t answered their prayer for healing the way they thought He would, see below:

Father I know you are God and that you never lie or abandon your children, but it sure feels like you did in this situation. It looks like you didn’t keep your promises to me and it feels like your love failed me. I know my perception is wrong because you are always good. I need you to help me trust your heart when I can’t understand your actions. Please heal my heart and deliver me from this disappointment.

Take some time to discuss this topic with your group, what has encouraged you and what challenges you.

Key Scriptures:

Acts Chapter 3:1-10;16

One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer—at three in the afternoon. 2 Now a man who was lame from birthwas being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts. 3 When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. 4 Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, “Look at us!” 5 So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them.

6 Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” 7 Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong. 8 He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God. 9 When all the people saw him walking and praising God,10 they recognized him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate called Beautiful, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through him that has completely healed him, as you can all see.

2 Timothy 3:1-5
But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.

James 5:14-15
Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven.

Matthew 10:8
Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.

1 Corinthians 4:20
For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power.

Luke 4:18-19
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
    because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.

2 Timothy 4:20
Erastus stayed in Corinth, and I left Trophimus sick in Miletus.

Matthew 11:2-6
When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples 3 to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?” Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see:5 The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. 6 Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”
